Here I explain the quickest way to sing bass in the vocal fry (or subharmonic) register. I’ve been able to do this for a while, but I never thought of a way to teach it until recently. Also, the octave drop technique comes from David Larson. If you haven’t seen YouTube his channel, check it out, as he has AMAZING control over this register!
This is an amazing video that really put me in touch with vocal fry very quickly…. I can hear your vocal fry is really quite “loud” or metallic sounding when you speak with it… Is mine going to get stronger with time? I am fascinated by all types of ethnic singing too such as Tuvan and Inuit throat singing and the ability to do animal sounds etc… Would love a video on that if you and others are interested too…. Many Blessings. Thierry
Yes, practice will make perfect in this case. As you continue practicing vocal fry over time, your nerves will learn to control the frequencies of each vocal fold individually. Eventually you will start feeling a deeper and smoother resonance, which is when your vocal folds are beginning to vibrate at the proper 3:2 ratio required for the true subharmonic tone. It won’t ever feel like your folds are vibrating at different speeds, though. Which was slightly disappointing to find out at first. XD
Hope this helped!
